Natural Health

Whether to become a vegetarian or not is a question many people face on a regular basis and the answer to this is not always clear to them. It is surprising how many people are willing to do this but cannot grasp just how important even one person who changes is in the overall picture. However, if enough individuals do stop, it becomes statistically more important to the health of animals on this planet. One argument for making this change are the benefits it has on your health and the problems that an excess of meat causes, like heart disease; this is the most common reason for death in America and other big meat eating nations.

Many of today’s heart conditions would not be so commonplace if people did not eat so much food with high levels of cholesterol, such as dairy products and eggs. According to Earth Save, the average vegetarian has about a quarter of a chance of having a heart attack as the average person. Those individuals that have gone one step further an become vegans have around a ten percent chance of a heart attack as opposed to people on regular diets. A healthy heart is not the only ‘health benefit’ to becoming a vegetarian as there are other reasons too.

Normal, everyday food contains a whole host of preservatives (especially common in meat) that has shown links with many types of cancer. Hormones used in animal feed are obviously not present either in vegetarian meals, which have proved to create hormone problems in people. Some digestive conditions are claimed to be caused by a reaction to lactose which is avoided if you are a non-meat eater. You will also have the knowledge that by becoming a vegetarian many animals will not suffer as a result of your food preferences as well as the now obvious health advantages.

Studies suggest that the average United States citizen will consume more than two thousand seven hundred animals throughout their life. Just in a couple of decades, many hundreds of animals would not need to loose their lives if you were to make this commitment. In addition to this, if you stop eating eggs and drinking milk, you will also reduce your share in the suffering and death of battery hens and their offspring, as well as dairy cows. So the answer is yes, it does matter whether or not you become a vegetarian. This commitment matters to each individual for their health, the health of the planet and those of the animals which will not need to be slaughtered to provide food.
